INDIAN GOVERNMENT DECLARES NO REGULATIONS FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

India has taken a bold step forward in the global artificial intelligence race by announcing that it has no plans to regulate the technology. On Tuesday, the country’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that while it was aware of ethical concerns around transparency and bias, it was not considering bringing a law to regulate the growth of artificial intelligence in the country. Instead, the ministry referred to AI as a « kinetic enabler of the digital economy » and saw it as an important strategic tool for entrepreneurship and business.

AI EXPERTS URGE PAUSE IN DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS

Over 500 AI experts, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, have signed an open letter calling for AI labs to pause development of new large language models like GPT4 due to concerns of potential risks to society and humanity. The letter warns that these systems could pose profound risks if allowed to advance without sufficient safeguards in place. Although other experts argue AI could make misinformation and bias worse, some say attributing human-level intelligence to glorified chatbots is misleading. However, both camps agree that stricter regulations are desperately needed.

PRESIDENT BIDEN WARNS ABOUT POTENTIAL RISKS OF AI

US President Joe Biden has described AI as a technology that could help address tough issues like climate change and disease discovery but also poses risks to society and national security. He also stressed the need for tech companies to ensure their AI systems are safe before releasing them to the public. Asked if he believed AI was dangerous, Biden responded, « It remains to be seen. It could be. »

INDIA IS LATE TO THE AI PARTY, BUT AIMS TO CATCH UP

India lags behind other countries like the US and China in AI investment and startup companies. Last year, India spent just $3.24 on AI, making them the fifth largest spender on the world stage. However, India’s new pro-AI approach could help spur the creation of attention-grabbing startups and AI labs, especially if ambitious new technologists feel hampered by cautious regulatory environments in other countries.
