One year after Russia’s army retreated from Boutcha and the north of Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to defeat the « Russian evil » and punish those responsible for the massacre of Boutcha. Journalists found the remains of 20 men, including one with bound hands, in the aftermath of the Russian retreat. Kiev claims more than 1,400 civilians died in Boutcha district during the occupation. Reconstruction work is now underway in the area as Zelensky promises to ensure those responsible for the massacre are held to account. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo also spoke out against the Russian soldiers and officers responsible, calling them « murderers who will be judged for their crimes. »
