The cage is the relationship, Shia is definitely the boyfriend, whereas Maddie is Sia's "inner child" ~ all artists have a BIG inner child, indeed they ARE their inner child, or they wouldn't be able to create. In particular, Sia has been very open about being bipolar, which is a very common phenomenon in artists (along with neurosis and schizophrenia) ~ and Maddie seems to be switching between mania, anxiety and serene calmness (clearly driving Shia nuts), even stepping so far into her inner child (outside the cage) that Shia can't reach her… that's my read! ^_^
* I dislike calling bipolarity a 'disorder' in artists ~ because it seems so definitely to be a feature, not a bug… we're a social species, we all have our role to play ~ even to our own detriment <:)
